Conrad Cowart and I were talking and he asked about Mr. Geilen. I knew he had passed but wasn't sure exactly when, so I found it and decided to put it here. Mr. Geilen was a wise and friendly man, a great principal in my opinion. In fact, I thought he really put the word "pal" in Principal . . . I don't think we could have asked for better.

I agree with you, Ed, our Principal was a class act.

John Geilen is a "legend" in my life...he was actually my 1st grade-6th grade Principal at Thomas Jefferson Elementary. In fact our Vice-Principal Mr. Mack Barnett (remember the original "Wolfpack howl" at each pep rally?) was my Vice-Principal at Thomas Jefferson too. The year Mr. Geilen was transferred to Stillwell Jr. high, my family moved to Mandarin and I went to Loretto's 7th grade, then on to duPont the year it became a Jr. High, for 8th & 9th. I was thrilled to learn that both Mr. Geilen and Mr. Barnett would be at the "new & air-conditioned" Wolfson. They always made school events lots of fun. What are the chances of having the same principal and VP in 1st grade and then in high school too? My family was fortunate to have known both of these fine admins for all those years. Mr. Geilen's middle daughter Laurie (also a Home Ec. teacher) began teaching at Ed White High the year after I had been teaching at Andrew Jackson High. I could not resist teasing her that I've known her dad 1 year longer than she's known him! Such great memories of a truly great principal and his wonderful family.
