In Memory

Marshall Alan Jenkins

Marshall’s daughter Shyla has shared for everyone some words on the life of her father:

My wonderful dad, Marshall Alan Jenkins passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in the early hours of this morning (7/12/2018). He and my mother were together for 43 years and she was able to leave her cancer treatment early to be by his side until the very end. Thank you all for your love and support throughout his two year battle with Cancer. Your prayers, good vibes and Facebook postings to us and him have lifted our family during all the difficult times we faced and helped Dad propel his fight against this vicious disease. We know like so many times before he is traveling ahead to check out all the cool spots in Heaven so that when we get there he can teach us all about them. We are truly heart broken that he has left us here but know that in all things God has a plan even when we don’t understand or appreciate it. Dad was never one for somber funerals so instead we will be holding a Celebration of his Life on October 13th. This is open to all who would like to come celebrate the quite man who touched so many lives. Please feel free to share this posts information to friends of his who are not on Facebook and as we get closer to the date we will post more details of times and locations for the event. If you have a favorite picture of him feel free to post it below or send it to us privately for use in his photo Memorial we will be putting together for the event.

Marshall Allan Jenkins, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on July 12, 2018, after a long battle with cancer. Known for his kindness, humor, even temper, and ability to fix almost anything, Marshall was retired from Siemens Medical Systems, where he worked as an X-Ray Field Engineer throughout the Southeast for 33 years. A native of Jacksonville, Marshall graduated from Wolfson High School (Class of '69) and earned a degree from Florida State College at Jacksonville. He had a passion and love for Art and History, especially around the American Revolution and World War II; a passion he shared with his children and their friends. He was also a gifted musician who taught himself to play classical guitar. He had a traveler's soul and was able to visit many cities throughout Europe, North Africa, and the U.S during his adventures. Marshall spent his childhood growing up in the Southside neighborhood of St. Nicholas, where he and his friends could usually be found playing and exploring on the banks of the St. Johns River. These early experiences led Marshall to become an avid fly fisherman, and he delighted in spending time on the water with friends and family during his retirement. His favorite sports pastime was watching his beloved Florida Gators. A wonderful husband and true family man, Marshall cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. In addition to the Hon. Suzanne Jenkins (wife of 41 years), he is survived by his children Shyla, Bryan, Sarah Cooke (Brian Cooke), and grandson Logan Marshall Cooke, (Jacksonville); his brother, Dr. Frank Jenkins (Sawgrass) and Frank's children Adam, Stephen, Paul, Connor and Catherine; his sister Janet Linke (Jacksonville) and her son Chris; and a circle of much-loved friends and neighbors. He was a member of Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church. The family will hold a Celebration of Life for Marshall on October 13, 2018, at 11AM at Hendricks Ave. Baptist Church with Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center or Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church.

Very sad news about Marshall.  Although we didn't run around together socially and I only knew him for those two and a half years of my Wolfson HS days, I always respected him as one who carried himself with quiet strength and who was a fierce competitor on the field and track.  My most vivid memory of him was the time we were scrimmaging during two-a-day practices over by the drivers ed parking lot.  I was lined up in the defensive backfield during a 6-on-6 exercise when Marshall took the hand-off right up the middle . . . I got into my best defensive crouch, all set to make the tackle (knowing this was probably going to hurt) . . . Marshall ran right over my ass, leaving me flat on my back!!!  However, being the gentleman he was, he was the first person to help me back to my feet.  I will miss seeing him next year . . .

What a great story Tom!  Marshall had such a quiet, calm and humble way that I admired.  Coming to our 40th Reunion was his first and he could not thank me enough for making him go.  He had a blast waking down memory lane and seeing everyone!

There will be a Memorial service for Marshall in October since his wife is also battling cancer now.  The family has asked me if any classmates would like to join in with any stories.  If you don't mind, I would love to share this one with them.

God Bless...

Margaret

I went through grade school as well as high school with  Marshall,I remember him as being quiet and a classy  guy, After reading Toms message about  Marshall running over him in practice, I remember we were playing sand lot football .I believe it was behind the Hendricks Ave pool.anyway Marshall broke loose running the ball  and I was the  only one left that had a  chance of tackeling him, I grabbed him  around his waist and he dragged me for  about 10 yards but  I hung on and somehow got both my legs wrapped around his and tripped him up  and  down  he went, I think  he was as shocked as I was that i got him down, I wasn't very big , but he got up smiling, he was strong, been  along time since I have seen him RIP my friend

I remember Marshall in 7th grade at that old school in San Marco always a very humble person a real class act. I believe he Bill Thompson and I all had 6th period PE that’s when I found out about his Athletic Abilities and his competitive spirit !! As we moved through the years and got to Wolfson Marshall was a true team player and someone you knew always had your back . Our Senior year Bill Thompson Marshall and I were in the backfield along with Kookie Brown Bill and I got a lot of publicity but I can tell you Marshall was every bit as important to our teams success! Nothing but great memories about Jenks he was a good friend and I know his family will dearly miss him . Our prayers and thoughts are with his family and I love the idea of a celebration of life to honor him as that is exactly what Marshall would have wanted . We

Marshal was a classmate, teammate, good person and a friend. I bragged on Marshals football abilities as much as anyone out there on the field. I only wish I would have hung with Jenks more after high school. I regret not seeing him much but I will never regret knowing him. God bless you Marshall and hopefully someday we’ll run together again.

Met Marshall in 7th garde where we had a number of classes together. Got to know him as a really nice guy. Didn't see him much during the Wolfson years but on our first day of our senior year, when we were passing each other between classes, he remarked it looked like we didn't have any classes together "like in 7th". Was kind of surprised this football notable remembered that.

A number of decades later, saw Marshall at a Douglas Anderson event. By the time I was able to turn my attention away from the coversation to go say something to Marshall, he was lost in the crowd. I remarked to my daughter I had seen someone from Wolfson - her understated retort (that can only be delivered by a teen when she is reminded, once again, Mom has been living under a rock), "Oh, that's Shyla's dad".

So Marshall is still with us is a special way - through the continuing strong friendship between two young ladies (who graduated together) of two Wolfson graduates. God speed, Marshall.
